  Devil duck race!

This weekend, the first leg of the 2007 Seattle devil duck races got underway at Cal Anderson park in Capitol Hill, in a particularly treacherous fountain featuring a whitewater chute that empties into a pylon-studded sea.

I am not sure who won. If you were there, please let me know. I was too busy kicking my duck.

Ceremonies concluded with random cake items at Espresso Vivace.

Comments:
It was an awesome day for race fans everywhere. The much favored purple "Nupperduck" was easily beaten in both heats upsetting his longtime fans.

The first race began with a false start by the red "J-Duck" which judges ruled as unintentional and still allowed her to compete in both races. The mean looking black duck with red wings "BlackBird " pulled into an early lead, but got caught up on one of the, as he described it, "pachinko-like" obstacles (which is sure to cost him some of his lucrative corporate sponsors like Uberhoot, and Melt Banana Dinner Cereals, Inc.). The first race came down to some exciting action as Makry's "Zebra Duck" ("Zed-Duck" as he is known overseas) and the pink “iDuck” (the youngest racer in the event at only 1 year old) were neck and neck into the finish line. But a photo finish revealed that the “Zebra Duck” pulled ahead by a beak in the last 100th of a second to claim First Place. The Coke sponsored “C2 Duck” with its bright yellow polka dot motif finished 3rd and it isn’t clear among the remaining racers (Nupperduck, Invisi-duck, and J-duck) what order they finished in since the network went to a commercial break before they had even crossed the finish line.

The second race brought even more thrilling action as the racers all retooled their ducks and retrofitted them with duck tape (supplied by TeamNup) which prevented them from becoming waterlogged on the course. But the “iDuck” pit crew observing the previous race decided to switch out their pink duck and replace it with a smaller yellow one for the second race. And that planning by the pit crew paid off as the smaller, sleeker, yellow “iDuck” easily pulled ahead off the starting line and made it to the checkered flag before the other ducks had even made it halfway down the course. This made the driver of the “iDuck” the youngest racer to ever take home the gold medal in DUCAR circuit history! She did victory laps around the course in her matching pink shoes. While we saw similar unimpressive racing action from the remaining ducks, the “Invisi-duck” showed an impressive technique that has since been described as “tumbling” towards the finish line.

Stay tuned for more exciting racing action as DUCAR presents “Rumble in the Bamboo Jungle: Tokyo Extreme Japanese Garden Waterfalls Race” later this summer. It should provide for some breathtaking scenery as well as extreme racing conditions. Duck racing fans stay tuned….
